Everything to know about Enamel Paint

When it comes to painting, it is a fun topic. Painting can be very joyful because the outcome of the process is indeed very colorful and pleasing to the eyes and mind. However, selecting the right kind of paint and finish is where the challenge lies.

Selecting the right type of paint is important, as there are several types of paints available such as:

  • Oil Paint
  • Enamel Paint
  • Emulsion Paint
  • Cement Paint
  • Anti-corrosive Paint
  • Plastic Paint
  • Silicate Paint
  • Synthetic Rubber Paint

What exactly is Enamel Paint?

Enamel paint is a kind of paint that air-dries to a glossy finish that is used for coating surfaces that are outdoors or otherwise subject to hard variations in temperature. Most paints nowadays are termed with enamel that are meant to be used outside, i.e. on the exterior. Also, there is no generally accepted definition or standard for use of the term enamel paint, and not all enamel-type paints may use it.

In typical fashion, enamel paints are used to describe oil-based covering products, usually with a significant amount of gloss in them, however recently many latex or water-based paints have adopted the term as well. Enamel means “hard surfaced paint” and usually is in reference to paint brands of higher quality, floor coatings of a high gloss finish, or spray paints. Most of the paints are alkyd resin based, however some have been made by adding varnish to oil-based paints.

Where do I use enamel paint?

You can use it for exterior or interior as well. It provides great durability and protection from external factors. The quality of the enamel greatly depends on the quality and reliability of the paint though.

Can I use enamel paint on wood?

Definitely. It will stick to wood work greatly. Enamel paints coat smoothly and dry hard, which means they’re good at setting up on most surfaces. A coat of primer on top though, and will make the painted finish last longer.

Disadvantages of enamel paints:

They mostly give a sheen, glossy look hence they can be damaged by scratches, etc if the paint is of a low quality. Also, it shrinks more and on a wall with any imperfections, it can look very bad.

But overall, they are still a very good choice when it comes to painting some surfaces, which need a sheen look to them. So, it is indeed up to you to decide about which paint you’d like to use for your space.
